It is branded as one of the finest courses on the Costa del Sol delivering views of both the Mediterranean Sea and stunning mountains to the North. The final field boasts all four current Major Champions, six of the leading seven players in the world and it will be the first time all three of the World’s top ranked players have competed in Spain. There are 14 nationalities represented and likely 50 OWGR points on offer to the winner in what is the strongest World Match Play Championship field to date.
The match play format is great for this course as many holes are able to deliver exciting risk reward options that should test the most confident and able of golfers. Few holes of special mention however – the par five Third with an approach over water, the reachable par four Fourth, the blind tee shot, double dog leg par five 11th and the undulating uphill par four 15th to a small green. All will play their part from early in the round providing exciting attacking golf but who will conquer?
Irelands Graeme McDowell at 16/1 has struggled over the full distance in recent weeks but shows brighter promise after leading at the TPC at Sawgrass and will want to make amends for a largely wet last round. The match play format also suits his game – as his unforgettable singles performance at last year’s Ryder Cup testified. And can you also ever really ignore Ian Poulter at 16/1 in match play?
Masters winner and leader of 2011 Race to Dubai, Charl Schwartzel at 16/1 will be a force to be reckoned with with reasonable length off the tee and putting being the two key factors to success over this new course.
Luke Donald at 7/1 is a consistent performer on both sides of the Atlantic and already holds a match play trophy from the WGC Accenture World Match Play, grinding out a victory over Martin Kaymer. A top two spot could take him top of the World Golf Rankings.
