MLB Picks: Boston Red Sox Season Preview
MLB Picks previews the 2011 Major League Baseball season for the Boston Red Sox, a team many expect to return to their glory days this season and make a run at the World Series.
Boston finished with an 89-73 SU record last year, third in what was an unusually weak American League East division, behind the New York Yankees and the Tampa Bay Rays. Injuries to key players Josh Beckett and Jacoby Ellsbury didn’t help, but the bottom line was the Red Sox missed the playoffs for the first time in three seasons, and with a franchise as proud as the Red Sox, that meant big changes over the winter.
General Manager Theo Epstein did just that, making a number of significant moves that will no doubt have the team challenging for the AL East title this season. In December, Epstein signed coveted Tampa Bay outfielder Carl Crawford to a 7-year, $142-million contract. The 2010 Gold Glove winner had played for the Rays his entire career.
The Red Sox also pulled off one of the biggest trades of the offseason, acquiring first baseman Adrian Gonzalez from the San Diego Padres for a number of prospects, including pitcher Casey Kelly, free-agent 1B Anthony Rizzo and OF Reymond Fuentes.
Boston now boasts one of the best starting lineups in MLB: Catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia, 1B Adrian Gonzalez, 2B Dustin Pedroia, 3B Kevin Youkilis, SS Marco Scutaro, OF Jacoby Ellsbury, OF Carl Crawford, OF J.D. Drew, and, entering his 15th season, designated hitter David “Big Papi” Ortiz.
